Faculty of Defectology and Social Work offers its students the opportunity to obtain classical education. The Faculty consists of two departments: the Speech Therapy Department; the Special Education and Rehabilitative Psychology Department. The Faculty carries out professional retraining and advanced training upon eight programs of defectological profile.

There are six classrooms, equipped with computer equipment, projection equipment and interactive whiteboards for lectures and practical exercises at the Faculty disposal, as well as computer classes with unlimited access to the Internet and a methodic room, well-stocked with special literature and electronic database of scientific research.

Annually the Faculty carries out nationwide and international scientific-practical conferences. The higher educational teaching personnel is engaged in research on proactive topics in accordance with the assignments of the State bodies and commercial organizations.

International Cooperation

The Faculty of Defectology and Social Work actively cooperates  with universities in Europe and the CIS countries. The Faculty co-operates with the Nordic Council of Ministers, Humboldt University of Berlin (Germany, Berlin), Gdansk University and higher Pedagogical Academy (Poland), National Pedagogical University named after M.P. Drahomanov (Kiev, Ukraine), the Belarusian State Pedagogical University named after Maksim Tank (Republic of Belarus, Minsk), Special Education Institute of Russian Academy of Education, Cherepovets Metal Industry Public University (Cherepovets),  Moscow Pedagogical State University (Moscow), Russian State Pedagogical University named after A.I. Herzen (St. Petersburg), Rostov State Pedagogical University (Rostov-na-Donu), Pskov State Pedagogical University named after S.m. Kirov (Pskov).

Career and Employment

Students of the Faculty are highly qualified specialists in the fields of special education, special needs education, defectology and social work. The graduates of the Speech Therapy Department and the Special Education and Rehabilitative Psychology Department work in medical and educational institutions, providing assistance to persons with health limitations.

The Special Education and Rehabilitative Psychology Department trains professionals to meet the needs of State and public institutions that deal with improving socio-economic conditions of people, by way of solving the relevant issues of  society and individual development.

The Faculty graduates have the opportunity to enroll on postgraduate study programs and continue their scientific career as researchers and educators.

Department Regulations

Scientific-research work of the Special Education and Rehabilitative Psychology Department is carried out in accordance with the most crucial issues of special education in the Russian Federation, Europe, St. Petersburg and Leningrad region:

  • the establishment of a system of early care and educational assistance for children with health limitations from the first year of life;
  • inclusive education for children with health limitations in secondary school environment;
  • specialized training as a means of socialization and inclusion of children with health limitations in secondary school;
  • universal model of socializing the graduates of special children's homes in Leningrad region;
  • socio-pedagogical conditions for providing socialization of children studying at  special child  classes;
  • improvement of higher and post-graduate education for  specialists in defectology;
  • system of continuous professional education for persons with health limitations and persons with disabilities.

Employees of the Department are engaged in scientific researches in the  following fields:

  • problems of teaching deaf and hearing impaired preschool children;
  • habilitation work with deaf young children;
  • establishment of regional system for diagnosis and correction of sensorimotor and intellectual disorders in young children (first and second years of life);
  • problem of family upbringing of children with special educational needs;
  • studying features of meaningful and methodical part of educational process at correctional educational establishments of various kinds;
  • system of inclusive training for students with special educational needs in rural schools;
  • providing socialization for children with complex multiple developmental disorders;
  • personality traits of pupils with communicative difficulties;
  • distance learning for disabled children and children with health limitations;
  • features of professional and personal development of students of the Faculty of Defectology and Social Work.

Scientific research carried out by the Department is focused on developing and creating the concept of improving the quality of life of persons with disabilities through establishing favorable conditions for their comprehensive development and functioning; that is the most important aspect of implementing the priority national projects and demographic policy of the Russian Federation.

The Department offers postgraduate study course and doctoral study course on the following specialties:

  1. 13.00.03 Correction Pedagogy,  Surdopedagogy, Tiflopedagogy, Oligophrenopedagogy, Speech Therapy;
  2. 19.00.10 Rehabilitative Psychology;
  3. 19.00.13 Developmental Psychology.

The Department carries out the annual International Conference  Special Education , which involves more than 200 participants from 20 regions of the Russian Federation and six foreign countries, including researchers, practitioners, representatives of community organizations, parents, graduate and postgraduate students.

The Department conducts scientific research activities in the framework of cooperation with the following leading Russian universities, institutes and academies:

  • Leningrad Region Institute of Educational Development;
  • Southern Federal University (Rostov State University), Department of Special Education and Psychology;

  • St. Petersburg State Pediatric Academy (the Faculty of Clinical Psychology, the Department of Psychology and Psychiatry);
  • Perm State University (Department of Pre-School Special Needs Education);
  • Belarus State Pedagogical University named after Maxim Tank; Herzen (the Faculty of Special Education, Department of Oligophrenopedagogics, Surdopedagogics);

Department Regulations

Since the foundation of the Speech Therapy Department and until March of 2012, its Head was Raisa Ivanovna Lalaeva, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor, Academician of International Academy of Sciences,  laureate of the Russian Federation Government Prize in the field of education.

The Department takes an active part in international cooperation with many universities in Europe: Gdansk University, Jan Kochanowski University (Kielce, Poland), Rzhezhov University (Rzhezhov, Poland), Special Academy Education (Warsaw, Poland).
