Faculty of Foreign Languages includes three departments (those of English Philology, German and French Philology, Translation and Translation Studies) and trains highly qualified specialists according to Federal State Educational Standards for teaching, translation and research activities.

The Faculty is training more than 300 undergraduate and graduate students. The training and instruction is conducted using the most up-to-date teaching technologies, including the usage of computers, video equipment, multimedia learning tools. The Faculty has its own library, which contains the collection of the most up-to-date literature on all ongoing educational programs as well as audio and video learning materials.

The students of our Faculty have the opportunity to take part in cultural and educational programs in the United States, Great Britain, Germany, as well as in scientific competitions, both University and all-Russian ones. In accordance with the demands of international student exchange programs, the most successful of our students are trained at the University of Bergamo (Italy), which is the foreign partner of LSU named after A.S. Pushkin.

The higher educational teaching personnel of the Faculty is a cohesive team of passionate, dedicated and talented teachers, including four doctors of science and twenty-four candidates of science.

The Faculty has been successfully implementing educational programs on three directions of higher professional education, and preparing scientists for two specialities of postgraduate studies.

Department Regulations

Department of English Philology was founded as an independent structural subdivision in 1994. Its first head was Dr. of Philological Sciences, Professor Victor V. Kabakchi, from 1997 till 2014 year its head was Dr. of Philological Science Sciences, Professor N. Shadrin, then in 2014-2017 the Department was headed by Doctor of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor O.N. Morozova; currently its head is Dr. Plilological Sciences, Professor Svetlana V. Ivanova. 

The main activities of the Department are:

  • teaching English as the first and the second foreign language for students pursuing bachelor’s degree in 44.03.01  Teacher (Pedagogaical) education doing their major in Foreign Language (undergraduate) and for the students pursuing their master’s degree in 44.04.01 Pedagogical education, training program  Language Education  (MA);
  • teaching theoretical disciplines of linguistic and methodological cycles;
  • teaching English for graduate students doing their major in non-linguistic fields;
  • training post-graduate students pursuing their degree in 45.06.01 LINGUISTICS and LITERARY STUDIES, Germanic languages.

Training at the Department is carried out in accordance with the Federal State educational standard of higher education. Targeted training allows the graduates of the Department to successfully carry out professional activities in pedagogic, scientific-methodical, scientific research, educational fields. Our graduates work as teachers of foreign languages, researchers, academicians, heads of educational establishments, educational supervisors, experts in the field of education.

During their work over the courses our Department teachers constantly improve the content of theoretical courses (“Introduction into Linguistics ,  Lexicology ,  Stylistics ,  Theoretical Phonetics ,  Theoretical Grammar , etc.), elective courses, special courses, seminars and practical exercises by way of using achievements of modern science and the results of their own methodological and research activities. All the teachers of the Department regularly work on the improvement of their professional skills, attend courses, participate in conferences and scientific-methodical seminars.

Teachers of the Department annually carry out the University Olympiad on the English language among the school graduates of Leningrad region and St. Petersburg.

The Department maintains and develops the previously established biases with scientific and educational institutions of St. Petersburg and other regions and countries, participating in joint scientific-methodical seminars and conferences (Saint Petersburg State University, Russian State Pedagogical University named after A.I. Herzen, Saint Petersburg State Agrarian University, Novgorod State University named after Yaroslav the Wise, Tula Pedagogical University, etc.).

Teachers and students of the English Department, are members of the St. Petersburg English Language Teachers Association (SPELTA) and the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL).

Department Regulations

The Department of Foreign Languages was established in 1993, the three languages: English, German and French, are taught at the Department. Classes are held at all faculties of the University in intramural and extramural forms of training. Training at faculties of non-language majors is carried out in accordance with State educational standard for higher vocational education.

The department educates students of 1-St and 2-nd courses and masters of different directions.

Educational-methodical work of the Department is closely linked to research activity. The teachers of the Department have protected Candidate theses:

The staff of the Department of foreign languages: 1 Doctor of Sciences, 7 Candidates of Philological Sciences and 2 Candidates of Pedagogical Sciences. Scientific research is carried out within the framework of scientific theme of the Department: “The System Relationships in the Lexicon” and reflect a wide spectrum of problems of modern philology. Subjects of scientific work includes such issues as: the language of literary text, language and culture, semantic organization of text. Interest to these issues is confirmed by an active publishing work of the Department.

In 2008 Elena Khamaganova, Associate Professor became the winner of the all-Russian Contest for the best monograph in the nomination  Foreign Language .

Links with other universities and international cooperation

The Department supports creative relations with the departments of foreign languages of Saint Petersburg Sate University, Russian State Pedagogical University named after Alexander Herzen, Voronezh State University, Cherepovets State University, Bashkir State University, St. Petersburg State University of Economics.

Teachers of the Department are the members of the St. Petersburg English Language Teachers Association (SPELTA) and the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL), they partake in seminars and conferences of these organizations.

Department Regulations

The Department of German and French Philology was founded as an independent structural subdivision in 1994 year. Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor Sergey I. Alatortsev was the first Head of the Department.

 In 2015-2017 the Department was headed by Doctor of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor Nella A. Trofimova.

Since September 2017, Aleksey V. Nesmeyanov, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor is the Head of the Department of German and French Philology .

The main activities of the Department are:

  • teaching theoretical subjects of Linguistic and Teaching Techniques; teaching German as the first and the second foreign language for students pursuing bachelor’s degree in 44.03.01  Teacher (Pedagogical) education doing their major in Foreign Languages (undergraduate) and for the students pursuing their master’s degree in 44.04.01 Pedagogical education, training program  Language Education  (MA);
  • teaching German and French to graduate students doing their major in non-Linguistic fields;
  • training post-graduate students pursuing their degree in 45.06.01 Linguistics and Literary Studies, Germanic languages.

The Department of German and French Philology maintains close s with the Goethe-Institute in St. Petersburg. The teachers and students of the Department receive invitations and actively participate in various joint events: conferences, exhibitions and seminars on education, regional geography, methodology of German language teaching.

The Department maintains relationships with schools of Leningrad region and St. Petersburg and develops the previously established relations with the school of German Language  dasPROEKT , as well as with scientific and educational organizations in St. Petersburg and other regions and countries, participating in joint scientific-methodical seminars and conferences (Saint Petersburg State University, Russian State Pedagogical University named after A.I.Herzen, Linguistic Research Institute of RAS, Saint-Petersburg State University of Economics and Finance, Novgorod State University, etc.), due to this fact a wide scale and efficient exchange of scientific and methodological information is carried out.

Every year during their summer holidays the students  of German Language Department attend Germany and work at  youth summer camps.

The students of the Department take part in the annual Interuniversity students scientifically-practical Conference  Issues of Germanic Philology , as well as in various University and all-Russian competitions:  I will be Appreciated in the Twenty-First Century ,  National Birthright of Russia ,  Youth, Science and Culture ,  The Attained Generation ,  The Imperatives of Time ,  My Law-Making Initiative”, in Olympiads o Russian and German languages and on foreign languages teaching techniques, “What?Where? When?”, “The Student of the Year”, “Miss LSU” 

The teachers of the Department upgrade their skill attending the intensive courses of spoken language and culture ,  methodological seminars, internships in Germany, Moscow and St. Petersburg supervized byGoethe-Institut.

Department Regulations

The Department of Translation and Translation Studies is a modern, dynamically developing unit included in the Faculty of Foreign Languages, carrying out training of Bachelors with their major in 45.03.02 Linguistics.

The Department of Translation and Translation Studies trains specialists in the field of language education, cross-language communication, intercultural communication and new information technologies, which are demanded in modern job market.

The educational process is organized according to the Federal State educational standards, harmonized with the Common European Framework of Reference, CEFR, what allows our students to pass international certification exams .

Teaching foreign languages is accompanied by acquiring knowledge of cultural and social life of the peoples speaking these languages. In 2013 and 2014 our students took part in cultural and educational programs in the UK and United States.

The Department has a multimedia class, a computer lab with language lab function. There is a specialized library with the collection of modern tutorials from leading European publishers at students disposal.

Students are actively engaged in learning, research and creative activities, they win national and university competitions:     I will be appreciated in the Twenty-First Century ,  National Birthright of Russia ,  What? Where?When?”, “Miss LSU”, “the Student of the Year”. 

Speaking two foreign languages, having mastered theoretical and practical skills of interpreting and translation our graduates are ready for translation and research activities. They work for various organizations and firms of St. Petersburg and Leningrad region.

The higher educational teaching personnel are the specialists of the highest proficiency level who seek to create atmosphere of comfortable learning, improving skills and developing creativity.
