Two graduating departments provide educational process at the Faculty:

  • The Department of Social-cultural Service and Tourism;
  • The Department of Natural Sciences and Geography

 

The Faculty carries out international cooperation in the filed of joint projects implementation, as well as research and practical training internships with the following European universities:

  • State University of Bergamo (Italy);
  • The Saimaa University of Applied Sciences (Finland);
  • University of Applied Sciences of Mikkeli (Finland);
  • Aktobe Regional State University named after K. Zhubanov (Kazakhstan).

The scientists of the Faculty collaborate with the leading national scientific and public organizations:

  • Botanical and Zoological Institutes of Russian Academy of Sciences;
  • Russian Geographical Society;
  • Institute of Limnology of Russian Academy of Sciences;
  • National Park  Valdaysky ;
  • All-Russian Scientific Research Institute for Plant Protection.

Teachers and students participate in and win a variety of competitions for scientific and research scholarships.

The Department implements State contract: № 720243 of July 17, 2017 in cooperation with the  Leningrad Region Committee on Natural Resources.   Support for Environmental Education, Training and Awareness of Schoolchildren in Leningrad Region . The works in the framework of this contract have been executed since 2002.

Federal project  Live Lessons  is being implemented in cooperation with the Leningrad Region Committee for Tourism, Russian Union of Travel Industry (Northwest Division) and General and Professional Education Committee of Leningrad region.

A large number of internships and practical trainings is a characteristic feature of future tourists, geographers, biologists, ecologists training . They take practical lessons on geology, meteorology and small-scale climatology, soil geography, etc.

Distant practical training on Economic, Social and Physical Geography, is of crucial importance. The routes of distant practical training course lied in the Urals and the Altai, the Lake of Baikal, the Republic of Karelia, Volga region, Siberia and other regions of Russia.

Our students participated in the expedition of the Russian Geographical Society named  Kyzyl-Kuragino  (Valley of the Kings, the Republic of Tyva); in the summer of 2013, 2014 and 2015, as well as in the Russian Geographical Society expeditions to the Isle of Gogland, in 2015, and to Serbia in 2016.

Teachers of the Faculty are repeated participants in national and international forums such as:  Iturup ,  Taurida ,  Health of the Nation is the Russian Prosperity Basis ,  Bio-industry ,  Leningrad Region: from High-quality Education to Successful Personality , Ecology of a Big City  , etc.

The University commands a unique educational and experimental base, our Botanical Garden, home to more than 800 species of decorative deciduous plants and greenhouses.

Our students travel around the country on their own, outside the educational process. Touring Club members have carried out expeditions to the White Sea, Kola Peninsula, Crimea, the Caucasus, the Altai. They have conquered the peak of Belukha in the Altai, as well as one of the highest peaks in Europe, Mount Elbrus, and they have unfurled the flag of the University at the top of Mont Blanc.

In 2011, with the assistance of the Rector of University the senior students with their major in Social-Cultural Service and Tourism have created an educational tourist center Tsarskoe Selo Campus; a hostel with the possibility to accommodate 50 people is opened.

All the rooms of the Faculty are equipped with multimedia equipment and have access to the Internet. The Faculty has its own Internet Centre.

In 2012 the Faculty opened the newest Laboratory of Molecular Genetics.

Student Scientific Society (SSS) carries out its activities actively.

The students of the Faculty successfully defend honor of the Leningrad State University named Alexander Pushkin winning the interuniversity, all-Russian and international competitions and Olympiads, such as:  The New Faces ,  I Will Be Appreciated in the Twenty-First Century ,  YUNECO , etc.

We are proud of the achievements of our students:

  • Kristina Kostiukhina and Julia Burenina are awarded with gold and silver medals of the International Exhibition-Competition  Bio-industry (October 2017, St. Petersburg) ;
  • Margarita Rogacheva is awarded with winner diploma in “the Student of the Year” contest in 2017 in the Young Scientist category  (April 2017, St. Petersburg)
  • Galina Malkina and Arina Shilyayeva are the laureates of Government of Saint-Petersburg for the implementation of diploma projects according to the task of executive bodies of government power (2017);
  • Tatyana Gorban is the winner of the XI all-Russian Forum  Health of the Nation is the Russian Prosperity Basis  in nomination “Nation Health and Physical Culture, Sport and Tourism .
  • Olga Osipova is the winner in the 11th Annual all-Russian competition of talented youth achievements  National Birthright of Russia  in 2017
  • Anastasia Yeremina is the winner of the VII International Scientific Practical Competition  the Best Research Work, 2017 .

Participation in various conferences and seminars is of crucial importance for the professional growth of teachers and students. International scientific practical conference  Innovative Development for Service and Tourism . Since 2009 we have successfully implemented the idea of  Lyceum Readings  an annual international scientific student conference  A Step into the Future: Current Students as Creative, Scientific and Professional Potential of Russia .

Our graduates have the opportunity to continue their education enrolling on the programs of Masters degree or postgraduate study.

The Faculty works closely with the schools of Leningrad region and St. Petersburg. School students take part in scientific expeditions, nature conservation campaigns and activities throughout Leningrad region, they come to the University to partake in environmental rallies and competitions for faculty Doors Open Day as well as Olympiads on various subjects.

There is Minor Academy of Sciences for Ecology, Study of Local Lore and Tourism (MASEC), whose members include more than 200 senior school students of various educational institutions of Leningrad region.

The Faculty of Natural Sciences, Geography and Tourism is distinguished by active and diverse extracurricular life. Freshman Feast, the  Equator , meet-the-artist events with the actors of the Petersburg theatres and etc. have become traditional activities.

Students take active part in volunteering in the following activities and events:

- Confederations Cup, 2017, St. Petersburg;

- World Festival of Youth and Students in 2017, Sochi.

- St. Petersburg International Labor Forum, 2017, St. Petersburg

Faculty students participating in the Club for the Lightheaded and Quickwitted (CLQ) have repeatedly become winners and prize-winners of the University League of this game; athletes of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Geography and Tourism take prizes in the LSU Student universiade.

Department Regulations

The Department was founded in September 2006 as a result of three departments merge: those of Chemistry, Biology, and Geography and Tourism.

Today the Department consists of 24 teachers, including four Doctors and 15 Candidates of Sciences. This is a unique multi-disciplinary team, which includes researchers and practitioners specializing in Geography, Biology, Agricultural Sciences, Chemistry, Geology, Ecology and Environmental Sciences, Biotechnology, Pedagogy and Methodology of Teaching Geography.

Leading teachers of the Department: Vyacheslav Kravtsov, Dr. Biol. Sciences, Professor, specialist in the field of Genetics, Clinical Cytology, Cellular Biotechnology; Fyodor Ye.Ilyin, Dr. Biol. Sciences, Associate Professor, specialist in Human Physiology and Ecology; Valentina S. Smirnova, Dr. Agricutural Sciences, specialist in the field of Decorative Horticulture and Floristics; Ludmila B. Vampilova , Cand. Geogr. Sciences, Associate Professor, Chairperson of the Commission for Historical Geography of the St. Petersburg Branch of the Russian Geographical Society.

Educational Process Organization

Curricula for Bachelor training include more than 80 academic disciplines, most of which are delivered by the Department of Natural Sciences and Geography.

There are teaching materials for all major academic disciplines developed, including educational and training-methodical manuals, workbooks. The lecturers of the Department have created training manuals for the schools of Leningrad region on  Field Geology for Schoolchildren ,  Scientific-experimental Work at the School Ground , repeatedly reprinted school manual on Local Lore  Tosno Territory”.

There have been issued the following textbooks and teaching aids for educational institutions of higher education:  Global Environmental Problems ,  Fundamentals of Geo-ecological Environment Management ,  Mapmaking and the Basics of Topography ,  Understanding Earth, Geological Processes and Rocks ,  Methodology and Practice of School Environmental Expeditions in the Leningrad Region , Human Physiology .

Traditionally, school teachers have worked with our Department, and now we also cooperate with our graduates, who are engaged in teaching  at schools, as well as being engaged in  GEO-ecological and Environmental Training and upbringing schoolchildren at environmental summer camps.

Creative s connect the Department with the Limnology Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences, Nizhnyaya Svir State Nature Reserve and Nature Park  Vepsan Forest . The landscape-recreational research and routes design for ecological and educational tourism determine the subject of the expeditions. An original manual  Cognitive Trails of Vepsa Forests: Design Technique  is published basing on the results of the expedition. Comprehensive scientific library collection of Limnology Institute is widely used by our students working on writing their courseworks and final qualification works.

Our students use Internet Center for practical and laboratory classes, and independent work.

The teachers from other universities and enterprise managers, as well as leading specialists on service and tourism are invited to conduct lessons.

The Department carries out international cooperation in the field of implementation joint projects, double degree programs, research internships and training practices with the following European universities:

  • University of Bergamo, Bergamo (Italy);

  • Saimaa University of Applied Sciences (Imatra, Finland);

The practice of obtaining dual degree is implemented by leading European universities on the basis of the Bologna Declaration of 1999. Students studying at the Department of Ecology and Nature Management, shall be allowed to participate in program to obtain dual diplomas. Two diplomas increase the competitiveness of graduates in the domestic and European labor markets.

The study of humanitarian and art cycle disciplines (Museology, Peterburg Studies, Methods of Excursion Work etc.) is carried out on the basis of the Russian Museum, the Museum of the Academy of Fine Arts, the Museum of Ethnography of the Peoples of the World (Kunstkamera) museums-reserves in Tsarskoe Selo, Pavlovsk, Peterhof, Gatchina.

The Department possesses an academic geological room, which contains exhibits of unique rocks and minerals, as well as the samples collected by the students during their summer field practices and expeditions. We are proud to present the Geological Map of Leningrad region which is the diploma project of a unique design, created by our graduates with their major in Geography.

A laboratory base is prepared in Chemistry Room for a wide range of analytical studies.

Biology Room is equipped with visual exhibits on Zoology, Plant Sociology and Floristry.

The research laboratory of Molecular Genetics provides the possibility to study techniques of work with innovative biological equipment, allowing our students to receive experience in biotechnology research.

The higher educational teaching personnel of the Department uses modern methods of teaching, applied multimedia as well as information and communication technologies for learning in the classroom in order to activate educational process. Extramural classes are provided with modern equipment, tools, etc.

Field practice is of great importance for the consolidation of the theoretical material and the mastery of skills acquired. During their field practice the students  become  cartographers, meteorologists, geologists, hydrologists, geomorphologists, geobotanists, botanists, zoologists, landsсape scientists, soil scientists, ecologists, biotechnologists and learn the field studies technique while studying the natural objects of Leningrad region. Long-haul complex practice routes lie in different natural zones of Russia, such as: Karelia, the Urals, the Middle and Lower Volga, the Don, the Altai and the Sayan mountains, Lake Baikal and eеc. Geography students have taken part in archeological and geographical expeditions of the Russian Geographical Society at the sites of the Valley of the Kings  Kyzyl-Kuragino  and  Gogland .

Student Scientific Society (SSS) has been created and carries out its activities. Our students are frequent winners of competitions at various levels. In All-Russian youth festivals  I will be appreciated in the Twenty-First Century ,  JUNECO ,  National Birthright of Russia (open competitions of research and creative works of the young) our students have become the winners of:
I prize competitions, the winners of the State Prize in the field of supporting talented youth (2012), awarded medals and silver badges (2011, 2012), gold and silver medals of the exhibition (bio-industry).

The teachers of the Department regularly undergo probation and study courses in specialized universities of our country, and participate in the inter-regional and international seminars and conferences.

Within the framework of the annual international scientific-practical Conference  Tsarskoye Selo Readings  of the Department maintains the section “Geo-Ecology. Lore. Tourism” with the participation of specialists and teachers from all over the North-West of Russia and other regions, methodologists and teachers of Leningrad region, scientists from CIS countries students of the Departments and other universities are also regular guests of the conference.   Conference proceedings are published.

Once a year the Department and the Research Institute of Geography, Ecology and Environmental Sciences are carrying out an international scientific-practical Conference  Ecological Balance , according to which the conference proceedings are issued.

All the mentioned facts contribute to the high quality training of bachelors and masters.

Department Regulations

The Department was founded in 2006 as a result of the transformation of the Department of Geography and Tourism, which had provided training for tourism professionals since 1999.

The first graduation of the Department students took place in 2003.

Spheres of professional activity of our graduates are:

  • the enterprises of the tourism and hospitality: travel firms, tour operators, hotels, restaurants, SPA and recreation complexes, transport companies;
  • cultural and recreational centers, event companies;
  • Tourism committees, departments of culture, social policy and international relations of the administrations of cities and regions;
  • advertising and PR-campaigns, exhibition and trade centers;
  • joint ventures and representative offices of foreign companies, customer service departments in firms, organizations, institutions and personnel centers.

Educational Process Organization

In 2017 the experts of the all-Russia project  The Best educational Programs of Innovative Russia” considered Education Program 43.00.02 Tourism, which is being implemented by the Department of Social-cultural Service and Tourism of LSU named after Alexander Pushkin, the best. The Educational program of our Department is included in the annual catalogue “The Best Educational Programs of Innovative Russia”.

The study of humanitarian and art cycle disciplines (Museology, Peterburg Studies, Methods of Excursion Work etc.) is carried out on the basis of the Russian Museum, the Museum of the Academy of Fine Arts, the Museum of Ethnography of the Peoples of the World (Kunstkamera) museums-reserves in Tsarskoe Selo, Pavlovsk, Peterhof, Gatchina.

Internships are organized on the basis of the educational touring centre “Tsarskoye Selo Campus”. Externship and pre-degree apprenticeship take place on the basis of the largest enterprises in areas of tourist service and hospitality. We have more than 100 internship agreements with enterprises and organizations of Saint Petersburg and Leningrad region.

Students participate in Student Scientific Society, make reports at scientific conferences held at LSU named after Alexander Pushkin and other universities of St. Petersburg and Russia. Research results are regularly published in collections of students scientific works.

Annually the Department carries out an international scientific-practical Conference  Innovative Development for Service and Tourism , the proceedings of the conference are published.

Students of the Department occupy honorary places and win titles in the professional, scientific and research competitions:

  • Anastacia Morozova is the laureate of Government of Saint-Petersburg Bounty for the implementation of diploma projects according to the task of executive bodies of government power in Saint Petersburg (2015);

Focusing on long-term State subprogram  the Development of Domestic and Inbound Tourism in Leningrad Region  of the State program of Leningrad region “Leningrad Region Economic Activity Stimulation” (approved on November 14, 2013, no. 394) the Department of Social-cultural Service and Tourism carries out scientific research on the following topic: “The Development of Domestic and Inbound Tourism in Leningrad Region: Social, Economic and Environmental Aspects”.
