In the face of growing global economy the young specialists, who can think broadly and creatively, are capable of self-education and adopting innovative solutions, are more competitive in the labour market. The substantial humanitarian and creative training endows the graduate with a whole range of such qualities.

Saint-Petersburg and Leningrad region with their numerous museums, exhibition centers, art galleries, monuments of architecture experience the lack of young qualified specialists with philosophical, cultural, design and art education.

Active scientific and creative work is constantly carried out by the Faculty. The students participate in numerous scientific and cultural activities of the city and the country.

The postgraduate training is carried out in intra- and extramural forms, both on budgetary and commercial basis.

A graduate student can work on a dissertation with major in the following fields:

  • 09.00.13 Philosophical Anthropology, Philosophy of Culture;
  • 09.00.14 Philosophy of Religion and Religious Studies

which can be defended at the Dissertation Council Д 800.009.01 at State Autonomous Educational Establishment of Leningrad Region LSU named after Alexander Pushkin.

Department Regulations

The Department of Cultural Studies and Art is the graduating department for the following fields of education:

  • Design Profiles: Graphic Design, Environment Design (Degree: Bachelor, Master);
  • Pedagogical education Profile: Visual Arts (Degree: Bachelor, Master);
  • Landscape architecture. Profile: Decorative Horticulture (Degree: Bachelor);
  • History and Theory of Arts. Profile: History and Theory of Art (level of training: postgraduate studies).

Teachers of the Department are leading specialists in the field of Art History, Fine Arts, Design, and Landscape Architecture, members of the Union of artists of the Russian Federation, the Union of Designers of Russia, the Union of theatrical Figures of Russia.

Head of the Department is Mikhail A. Koskov, Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Professor, Member of Union of Artists of the Russian Federation, author of more than 60 works on design trade and fine arts, including monographs ”Objective Creativity” (1996),  The Object World of Culture  (2004), Costume. Introduction into Theory” (2011), “Objective Design. Theory” (2012), “Object Forms Aesthetics” (2014), the author of the textbook “Design. Introduction into Theory”. (2009).   

The Department carries out research in the following areas:

Semiotics of Art: the problem of interpretation (head: Dr. of Arts, Professor I.-F. V. Furtay-Proskurina);

Design as Social and Cultural Phenomenon of Contemporary Time (the Heard of the research is  Mikhail A. Koskov, Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Professor).

The Department is working on organization and carrying out scientific activities of different level:

- Annual Conference  design Philosophy  as part of international scientific-educational forum  Days of Philosophy in St. Petersburg”;

- Annual all-Russian scientific and practical conference with international participation in the framework of the research project  Metaphysics of White Nights  ;

- Annual Interuniversity scientific-practical Conference of young scientists Representation of Childhood in Culture;

- Annual Scientific Conference of young scientists The Elements of Landskape architecture. Garden as Game. Playing in the garden.

The Department of Cultural Studies and Arts does not only cooperate with the higher educational institutions of the city and the country, but also with relevant organizations, such as the “Web-stroy”, LLC, “Jenergovektor” LLC, author's Design-Studio “APPLE+  , as well as professional creative associations such as Union of Artists of the Russian Federation, Union of Designers of Russia, the Union of Theatrical Figures of Russia, the Union of Architects of St. Petersburg, the Conservatory. In addition, the Department actively conducts fruitful joint creative work with Private Educational Institution of Additional Education Harmony. Divin’s School of Design (St.-Petersburg). Since 2015 the Department has started close cooperation with Institut francais (St. Petersburg).

Department Regulations

The Department of Musical Disciplines of State Autonomous Educational Establishment of Leningrad Region LSU named after Alexander Pushkin is the only Department working in the field 44.03.01-Pedagogical Education (Music Profile)-Bachelor.

The main educational program of an undergraduate degree with major in Pedagogics includes teaching students in accordance with the third generation Federal State educational standard for various educational profiles. Graduate, having acquired Bachelor degree in Teacher Education (music profile), carries out professional activities in the sphere of pedagogic education and culture.

The following FSES (Federal State Educational Standards) of Higher Education and a number of normative documents of Leningrad State University named after Alexander Pushkin are the normative base for the methodical, scientific and educational work of the Department: Department Regulations, Job Descriptions, Regulation on Interim Attestation of Students, Regulation for State Final Certification,Regulation of Methodical Complex, etc., the university curricula, the Department Work Plan for the school year.

Over the years of its existence the Department has graduated more than 300 professionals who work in Leningrad region: in Tikhvin, Vyborg, Lodeynoye Pole, Podporozhye, Boksitogorsk, Slantsy, Kingisepp, Volkhov, Kirishi. The alumni of the Department work in kindergartens, children's musical and general education schools, occupy administrative posts.

Tatyana P. Samsonova, Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Candidate of Art Theory, Professor, Pianist is the Head of the Department.

The Department of Musical Disciplines employs highly qualified specialists, who are are graduates of conservatories, laureates of Russian and international contests, Honored Workers of culture of Russia, the leaders of symphony orchestras. Among them there are Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, four Candidates of Art Theory, two Professors, two Associate Professors.

The Department of Musical Disciplines constantly attracts active leaders and workers of the following organizations to the educational process: Saint-Petersburg theatre of Opera and Ballet. M.P. Saint-Petersburg Theatre of Opera and Ballet. named after Modest P. Musorgsky (known as Mikhaylovsky Theatre), Andreev State Academic Russian Orchestra, Perezvony (Russian Folk Instruments Orchestra), Okhta Centre for Aesthetic Education.

Annually in March, April and May, the Department carries out musical disciplines Olympiade on musical art for graduates of music schools, studios, aesthetic centers, graduate schools. The Winners of the Olympiad have the advantage among the applicants for enrollment on the programs of LSU named after Alexander Pushkin.

The Department actively cooperates with St. Petersburg State Conservatory named after Rimsky-Korsakov, Russian State Pedagogical University named after A.I.Herzen, the Composers Union of Russia. The Department organizes meetings with well-known composers of St. Petersburg. 

The Department carries out student scientific-practical Conference The Domestic Composers in Musical Pedagogy, Festival Choir Meeting at Leningrad Lore.

In 2013 a Joint Student Chorus of Leningrad State University named after Alexander Pushkin (Gorbunky) was created in order to improve musical culture and spiritual potential of the youth; to implement cultural and educational activities in the student and General listeners environment.

The choir participated in the landmark event of Leningrad region: competition-review  Hail to the Homeland! , where it obtained the diploma of the winner of II degree; participated in the celebration of the 940th anniversary of the city of Toropets and the 750 years of St.Sergii of Radonezh.

The Department of Musical Disciplines carries out a wide range of educational and charitable concerts. Students and teachers of the Department play concerts at community houses, at orphanages and nursing homes, at libraries and schools of Leningrad region.

The Department of Musical Disciplines is situated in the picturesque place of the Leningrad region, in Gorbunky village that is six kilometers from the residence of the President of Russia, the Konstantinovsky Palace in Strelna. The faculties of Psychology, Defectology and Social Work, Philology of Leningrad State University named after Alexander Pushkin are also situated here. There is a comfortable hall of residence, good canteen, sports complex, fundamental library and computer classes.

Department Regulations

The Department of Philosophy carries out research work aimed at the development of scientific knowledge in the field of modern philosophy, with emphasis on the development of the following disciplinary areas: Philosophy, Philosophical Anthropology, Culture Philosophy of Religion and Theology. The successful implementation of research in these disciplines contributes to thematic and methodological updating the research practices, as well as to the expansion of philosophical tools of the Humanities as a whole.

The general direction of research work at the Department: Culture and People: Contemporary Philosophical Strategy. The chosen field of research provides continuity of the scientific research work of the Department, at which graduate students and doctoral students study majoring in 09.00.13 Philosophical Anthropology, Philosophy of Culture and 09.00.14 Philosophy of Religion and Religious Studies. The innovative works of young researchers are naturally included in the general projects of the Department.

The scientific research is carried out in the following directions:

  • Spiritual Culture of Russia: History and Modern Age (Head: Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Professor, M.A. Arefiev)
  • The Role of Religion in Modern Society (Head: Doctor of. Sociological  Sciences, Prof. M.Yu. Smirnov).

The following scientific and research work is carried out at the Department:

  •  Religion in Secular Society (Head: Doctor of. Sociological  Sciences, Prof. M.Yu. Smirnov)

The research work in the following directions results in monographs, textbooks and scientific articles. The teachers of the Department publish scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, such as Vestnik LGU (The Bulletin of Leningrad State University named after Alexander Pushkin), Journal of Russian Christian Humanitarian Academy, Ethno-socium and Ethnic Culture, the Omsk Scientific Journal, the International Journal of Cultural Studies,  International Journal of Cultural Research, etc.

The staff of the Department and the Northwest Center for religious and cultural studies have published the quarterly scientific journal Vestnik LGU, Series Philosophy (The Bulletin of Leningrad State University named after Alexander Pushkin) since 2007/ The journal is included in the lists of peer-reviewed scientific journals. These journals ought to publish the main scientific results of dissertations for Doctor and Candidate of Sciences degrees, as defined by the Higher Attestation Commission of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.  Publications in the Vestnik of LGU (Bulletin of LSU) reflect almost the entire range of modern philosophical thought issues .
